What is love? It is one of the most difficult questions for us, as a society. Centuries have passed by, relationships have bloomed and so has love. Poets and songwriters would be in a fine mess without it. Plus, it makes the world go round. But…no one can give the proper definition of love. No matter how you define it or feel it, love is the eternal truth in the history of mankind. Love is patient, love is kind. It has no envy, and it is never proud. Love protects, preserves, and hopes for the positive aspect of life. Always stand steadfast in love, not fall into it. It is like the dream coming true. Love can occur between two or more individuals. It bonds them and connects them in a unified link of trust, intimacy and interdependence. It enhances the relationship and comforts the soul. Love should be experienced and not just felt. The depth of love can not be measured. Look at the relationship between a mother and a child. The mother loves the child unconditionally, and it can not be measured at all. A different dimension can be attained between any relationship. Love can be created. You just need to focus on the goodness of the other person. If this can be done easily, then you can also love easily. And remember we all have some positive aspect in us, no matter how bad our deeds may be. Depending on context, love can be of different varieties. Romantic love is deep, intense and unending. The term Platonic and familial love are also matter of great affection. The meaning of love will change with each different relationship…But at times, the very existence of love is questioned. Some say it is false and meaningless. It says that it never exists because there have been many instances of hatred and brutality in relationships. The history of our world has witnessed many such events. There has been hatred between brothers, parents and children; sibling rivalry and spouses have failed each other. Friends have betrayed each other; the son has killed his parents for the throne, the count is endless. Even our modern generation is facing such dilemmas everyday. But “love” is not responsible for that. It is us, the people, who have forgotten the meaning of love and have undertaken such gruesome apathy. In the past, the study of philosophy and religion has speculated much on the phenomenon of love. But love has always ruled, in music, poetry, paintings, sculptor and literature. Psychology has also done lot of dissection to the essence of love, just like what biology, anthropology and neuroscience has also done to it. Psychology portrays love as a cognitive phenomenon with a social cause. It is said to have three components: Intimacy, Commitment, and Passion. Also, in an ancient proverb, love is defined as a high form of tolerance. And this view has been accepted and advocated by both philosophers and scholars. Love also includes compatibility. But it is more of journey to the unknown when the concept of compatibility comes into picture. Maybe the person whom we see in front of us, may be less compatible than the person who is miles away. We might talk to each other and portray that we love each other, but practically we do not end up into any relationship. Also in compatibility, the key is to think about the long term successful relationship, not a short journey. We need to understand each other and must always remember that no body is perfect. Be together, share your joy and sorrow, understand each other, provide space to each other, but always be there for each others need. And surely love will blossom to strengthen your relationship with your matter of affection. Look below at the several different poems. Which definition of “love” do you most agree with or relate to most? Which is your favorite? Leave me a comment with your opinion of these poems (and maybe love, in general) – they range from sappy to desperate to beautifully insightful. |
Unlicensed Love
On a summer's day long, long ago I fell in love and I'll never know Just what it was that made me feel So drawn to her, what the appeal That set my pulses so to race When e'er I gazed upon that face Of one who was scarce but a child Yet even then could drive me wild I'll never know the how's and why's I lost my heart to Hazel Eyes But when I got that long sought kiss I knew I'd found my Perfect Miss My elfin girl from down the lane And I'll never let her go again For how could I describe our love? Romantic love, all hearts and flowers No way to count the days and hours Spent in self-indulgent wishes And thoughts of long awaited kisses Of sweet embraces, tender sighs And gazing into love filled eyes Oh yes, it is that kind of love Or, is it yet the love of passion The ecstasy that knows no ration That shuddering nerve-tingling feeling The climax with your senses reeling The wondrous joy when you discover That sweet surrender to your lover Oh yes, it's that kind of love too. Or even yet a love that grows One that cares and one that knows That sees beyond the outer skin Into the person deep within That loves the spirit and the soul The inner self that makes the whole Built on trust and empathy A love you know was meant to be The love we share is all these things A love that has no need of rings A love you never need to doubt A love I cannot live without A love to last us all our days A love I'll share with you always .

Love Sonnet XVII
I don't love you as if you were the salt-rose, topaz
or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as certain dark things are loved,
secretly, between the shadow and the soul.
I love you as the plant that doesn't bloom and carries
hidden within itself the light of those flowers,
and thanks to your love, darkly in my body
lives the dense fragrance that rises from the earth.
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,
I love you simply, without problems or pride:
I love you in this way because I don't know any other way of loving
but this, in which there is no I or you,
so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,
so intimate that when I fall asleep it is your eyes that close.
- Pablo Neruda
Love Sonnet XI
I crave your mouth, your voice, your hair.
Silent and starving, I prowl through the streets.
Bread does not nourish me, dawn disrupts me, all day
I hunt for the liquid measure of your steps.
I hunger for your sleek laugh,
your hands the color of a savage harvest,
hunger for the pale stones of your fingernails,
I want to eat your skin like a whole almond.
I want to eat the sunbeam flaring in your lovely body,
the sovereign nose of your arrogant face,
I want to eat the fleeting shade of your lashes,
And I pace around hungry, sniffing the twilight,
hunting for you, for your hot heart,
like a puma in the barrens of Quitratue.
- Pablo Neruda
Love is not a Sound
Love is not a sound
often times spoken in haste
or promises you intend not to keep
or a walk down a one way street
Love is hope where hope was once severed
from your mind
Love is living each moment with the person
or love you find
Love is trust when trust repeatedly stole
from your life
Love is never giving up when you're
despondent
or in strife
Love is seeing all you can
in each and every man
'tis not a sound
that makes love profound
- Walter Rinder
Sonnet 43 When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see, |
For all the day they view things unrespected; |
But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee, |
And darkly bright are bright in dark directed. |
Then thou, whose shadow shadows doth make bright, |
How would thy shadow's form form happy show |
To the clear day with thy much clearer light, |
When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so! |
How would, I say, mine eyes be blessed made |
By looking on thee in the living day, |
When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade |
Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay! |
All days are nights to see till I see thee, |
And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me. - William Shakespeare |
The minute I heard my first love story,
I started looking for you, not knowing
how blind that was.
Lovers don't finally meet somewhere,
they're in each other all along.
- Pablo Neruda
Love
Are you fleeing from Love because of a single humiliation?
What do you know of Love except the name?
Love has a hundred forms of pride and disdain,
and is gained by a hundred means of persuasion.
Since Love is loyal, it purchases one who is loyal:
it has no interest in a disloyal companion.
The human being resembles a tree; its root is a covenant with God:
that root must be cherished with all one's might.
A weak covenant is a rotten root, without grace or fruit.
Though the boughs and leaves of the date palm are green,
greenness brings no benefit if the root is corrupt.
If a branch is without green leaves, yet has a good root,
a hundred leaves will put forth their hands in the end.
- Pablo Neruda
Love Sonnet XLV
Don't go far off, not even for a day, because--
because--I don't know how to say it: a day is long
and I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station
when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep.
Don't leave me, even for an hour, because
then the little drops of anguish will all run together,
the smoke that roams looking for a home will drift
into me, choking my lost heart.
Oh, may your silhouette never dissolve on the beach;
may your eyelids never flutter into the empty distance.
Don't leave me for a second, my dearest,
because in that moment you'll have gone so far
I'll wander mazily over all the earth, asking,
Will you come back? Will you leave me here, dying?
- Pablo Neruda

I think that Love is not a Sound is the most accurate depiction of the feelings and emotional boundries of this thing we call love.
i agree with the first poem of love. the insert from the bible [[in the beginning]] doesn't sound cheesy.
Love is so many things, it is impossible to describe.
Love is the glue that binds us together, it sews the fabric of the soul, drawing beings together.
I think that paragraph two depicts love in a way that i agree with. Most of all, I believe love is when despite all circumstances you are willing to sacrifice.
to me the word love can be a great thing if you know how to take care of the relationship you are in. This is an awesome topic to talk about because you get so mant different opinions and different point of views
Also, I believe that most of these poems depict infatuation, not love.
V ^.^ V
I think that love is pretty over rated because love can define so many things.
But if I had to agree with one of the poems, it would be:
"Depending on the context, love can be of different varieties."
I dont like any of these.
Or I cannot find one that is similar to my opinion of love. This is what I expected though. I really didnt think that some poem was going to share any of my same ideas on love.
yeah i agree 100% this is the most relevant topic we can cover
I agree with matt when saying love can't be described. It isn't juts one thing or another, its a lot of different emotions mixed in.
i like the one that goes like this
The minute I heard my first love story,
The minute I heard my first love story,
I started looking for you, not knowing
how blind that was.
Lovers don't finally meet somewhere,
by - Pablo Neruda
but i have ,my own that should be quoted
i think that love is like a flower that should be grown in the unconditional soil of trust and understanding and will grow on its own because a forced flower is not a healthy one
but yeah love is what it is
I don't believe any of the poems accurately depict how I believe love is. Although I have not decided for myself what love really means, and if it's really lasting. However, I am positive that it exists.
I agree with the 2nd poem. There is not only one deffition of love. People who say love does not exist have yet to experience it. Our world misconception of the meaning of love because they either are told its is nothing or use it to much. Love is not said in one word but is experienced in actions.
Have you seen that comic "love is..." where the naked little girl is always hugging the little boy and it says something like "Love is when you can't wait to get into each other's arms"? That comic has a new cheesy interpretation of love everyday. It demonstrates that love is only what you think it is and it varies from person to person. To me love is a hurricane, everyone is affected by its raging winds of affection, but the people in the eye feel oblivious to everything around them. And just like a hurricane, the winds of love can change, no matter how long the hurricane has been raging. And in the aftermath of the storm, everyone is devastated. Ok my metaphor is falling apart I better stop now.
The one I agree with the most is Love is Not a Sound. I think people today say "i love you" without meaning it too often. It's becoming just a saying, like a farewell when ending a phone conversation. You can say the words, but, in reality, all you are saying is "i like you." Love is something you should show and feel, but don't have to say, because saying and feeling aren't the same thing.
The one I don't really agree with is Love Sonnet XI by Pablo Neruda. Personally, it sounds more like lust to me.
The minute I heard my first love story,
I started looking for you, not knowing
how blind that was.
Lovers don't finally meet somewhere,
they're in each other all along.
- Pablo Neruda
I feel that i can relate to this one most becuase I beleive that there is some kind of "love" in all of us, it's just covered in anger, depression, confusion, and insecurity. that of course would depend on who the person is and how they really feel.
I agree with pablo neruda because all of his poems talk about the love that I see it as or think of as. Love can mean many things
<3.
I like the last poem...and also I agree with the statement, that no one can excatly discribe the meaning of love.
Love can't be defined. Everyone has their own different definition of love, based off of their own experiences. Those who say love is meaningless and pointless, they have not yet experienced the true gift of love. And love does not just apply to a partner in a relationship, it applies to anybody and anything.
I believe that it is entirely up to the writters of the poem that they believe love is. I believe that everyone has their own definition, or their own picture of it. I don't agree with any of the poems becuase of the solid fact that only to an extent I can agree. I can disagree a little more than agree with each of the poems specified.
i agree with Love by Pablo Neruda.
i have loved before but now i dont even want to
im scared to like someone, in fear that they will leave me again.
Love is something you can not touch or see. Its an internal feeling that you feel towards someone or something. There are different types of love. You have love for your mother, and you have a different love for your husband or wife.
Rawr! too many people are saying the same thing. To me, there are three versions of love, Romantic love, brotherly love (friendship), and Pltonic love (family). Love is very over opinionated but basically all the poems definition of love to me are saying the same thing.
one more thing if i may, there are two types of romantic love to me. There is loving somebody and being in love with somebody. you know. hintaty-hint-hint.
TEAM ROEMER!
The poem i agree with the most, and can relate to the most was Love is not a sound by Walter Riner. However, i think everyone had their own definition of love, and it would be impossible to make a universal meaning for it.
Love can be a good thing, when its agreeable, when its one ended its a recipe for disaster.
i agreed with love is not a sound...
The one that I liked the msot was the one called love is not a sound because it described love as something that gives you hop, which is what I agree with.
I agree with most of the people in that love is a mix of alot of emotions.
I agree kind of with the on talking about how lovers don't find each other they are in each other all along. I agree in the sense that your true love doesn't just pop up somewhere. Yet, I kind of disagree in the sense that there is someone in this world for everyone you just need to never give up. Nevermind, this is sounding kind of lame.
I agree with the poem love is not a sound because I believe love is made up of many things and if defined so many different ways. Also I think love is also sometimes people just use it as a everyday phrase, and I think that takes away from the meaning.
Love in its purest form is a lie in which people conform to and idiotic idea of pure bliss synthesized by the mind to trick the heart into thinking that there is a feeling of care and comfort within, and it is in that we try to rationalize an otherwise fake emotion and we can make sense of the lie that is known as love
in a way, i can relate to all of them, because of all of them has described the different thingys of love.
i like the one with sound the most
i think this is the most tru sounding. even though most them seemed faked, this is the most interesting one. really, the kind oif poem make me sick.
Love is in the air. HEHEHEH
i think love is something that cant be described and should stay that way. Its like saying that you know the meaning of life. Yeah love may be great but all means is that you like The physical part of someone. Hence why you are drawn to them. But if we had no body to posses, would there be any love?
Love is undefined. It's not a feeling or a state of mind as scientist try to define it as. Love just is. It is like describing the concept of infinity or existence. We know that it exists but we cannot comprehend how it works or why it does what it does. It seems to me that love is an uncontrollable, outside force working on our mind and body. We, ourselves, cannot bring it about. It is placed in us and only comes out when something triggers it, and when it is exposed, it consumes our thoughts, our decisions, our whole lives.
Sonnet XI is an example of obsessed love and how mad it can drive a person. It is horrifying, yes, that a person could be so drawn to another, and yet it is romantic in the sense that that is how they feel and they have no power over it because love is so binding.
i really like the first poem, i personally think it explains love in very good way. and an easy way to be understood. That poem is cute, and i like how he is talking about his personal experience.
i really liked the first poem. I think this described a lot what love is because it explains how you don't know why exactly you are drawn to a certain person you just are, and how once you fall in love with someone it is out of your control.i think that love is also different for everyone. i think that some people care more about physical things and i think that other people fall in love with someone for who they are. but i think everyone has their own definition of what love is.
"Love is trust when trust repeatedly stole
from your life"
i totally agree with this because i have had my trust taken for granted many times but i still love those people who messed with my trust. fr examlple i have done many things in my life for my mom to destrust me but my mom still loves me.
I like these poems. I agree with them because love is define in many different ways. Everyone has thier own thought of love. I think love is a special feeling that you feel for someone who you think is the right person with who you want to share your whole life with. Love is also caring for others. LOVE is LOVE........ ♥
I THINK THESE POEMS ARE SO COOL ESPECIALLY THE
Love Sonnet XVII BY Pablo Neruda BECAUSE ITS DEEP AND ITS ABOUT LOVE.
Love is such a genral word used now that it has lost all meaning.
After reading these poems, I would have to say that I have some amount of consternation in regards to some of the ideas. So many "love" poems have a focus on romantic love, but when I read them they strike me as superfluous and objectifying. This is not to argue against the idea of love, it's just to point out that it's used far too lightly and easily and poets seem to think they know a great deal about it when maybe all they're doing is writing a long flowery grocery list of praises.
The love found in friendship, I think, is often described in more honest and meaningful terms. No rose colored glasses involved.
I think that love is undefined, you can't really get a definition or answer to what is love? It is just the way you feel for someone, you can't really say what love is because there are different types of love, but loving someone is something different. I agree with most of Pablo Neruda's poems because he doesn't try to define love, he is just explaining the way he feels towards someone and the way that to him love feels. an i totally agree when he said that lovers don't find each other somewhere, but they are in each other all along. This in my opinion is talking about faith and how lovers are meant to be each other.
I disagree that love has the promise.Promise is nothing for love, people just tall someone their promises, but naver make them be true.
For my parents,my love is to be a good person and don't make trouble to them.
For someone,my love is waiting.
I think it is a waste of time to try to define love. Love is different for everybody depending on their life experiences and how they have grown up.
Love should be defined however people want to define it, as long as it is their own opinion on it, not someone else's.
Speaking of love, i love the album i just finished the review on
Even though i commented already, I'd also like to mention I liked this topic a lot. Its getting closer and closer to us graduating high school, and sooner or later we will all experience love in more ways, even some sooner than others. I think its important to understand love is something you feel, you and you alone. A true relationship that is in love, is with two people who share these same feelings for each other (each for their own reasons). I think people don't know if they love something or not, because they look at others and how they feel towards something and assume since they don't feel the same way, they don't love that certain something or someone. I think their is no point to life, if we couldn't love or if love didn't exist. I also think that everyone is capable of loving, just different experiences shape their view of it, and whether or not they are willing to let themselves love.
I truly think it is a relevant topic to cover.
Hi Elika, well you probably noticed that I haven’t been in class for the past few days. I have been really sick and I am just starting to recover now. So I decided to try to be productive and go on my blog :] I’m not exactly sure what this assignment correlates to, but I’m just gonna wing it.
From what I read in other students comments and in the poems and your writings, I think that it seems many people think just by talking about love and how it makes them feel, they become profound, or deep or insightful. I entirely disagree. Anyone who believes that by reading one of these poems they can find even one that relates well to their personal experiences, is lying to themselves. Assuming love exists, which I do believe it does, it is up to you as an individual to find it, accept it, and honor it. So many of these other comments, I do agree with, but there are many I don’t. I do agree with the point some students made about the phrase, "I love you." It has become so dilute in meaning. in our everyday life we can not determine whether or not some ones feelings are genuine or just seem so because we are trapped in a moment of uncertainty, where we seem to be pulling the wool over our own eyes. What is love? Don’t you think that is something you want to find on your own? Yes, these poems are beautiful, but I never want to experience love the way these authors do, I want to experience it the way I will. But I will not deny the fact that I have not yet experienced romantic love, it does not mean I am not willing to. Until the day when I do experience “love” I will not pretend to understand it, but I will simply accept it as a word yet to be defined in my vocabulary.
i reposted this because i changed my mind. Love is not a sound is probably the most accurate, just like 90 percent of everyone else said. but the reason i chose it was because instead of literally defining love, it says what love is through the feelings and emotions you get when you are in love. and that, ladies and gents, is the way to do it.
What many fail to realize is that much of what love is is objective, not subjective, meaning that it is not open to interpretation, and your own opinions are irrelevant, as they do not alter any of the facts involved. To say that love cannot be defined is completely and totally false, and only shows that you have yet to make the effort to try and define it. Although superficially it seems that love is diverse and varied, upon closer inspection several characteristics of love emerge that are present in every instance of romantic love, thus making it definable. These common factors are both physiological and psychological. The physical indications of love have been well documented and are proved irrefutably through empirical evidence. These include the presence of certain hormones and pheromones in the body, and increased glucose metabolism in certain areas of the brain (similar to those afflicted with bi-polar disorder in their manic state). Psychologically speaking, all love-based relationships exhibit some combination of attraction, intimacy, and commitment. The evolutionary origins of love are also equally easy to trace, as love evolved to provide an added psychological incentive to mate and care for a partner, which inevitably leads to an increase in offspring and increased representation in the genetic pool. What causes people to fall in love can also be demystified. Love is by no means blind. People do not fall in love for random or altruistic reasons. Love occurs when one party encounters another who exhibits traits they find desirable. This love is reciprocated when the object of the first party's love finds equally attractive attributes displayed by their suitor. Love is a mutually beneficial relationship, and as soon as one party is not gaining anything from the interaction, their love will fade. Or, if one party finds another who they find more desirable, their love will be transferred to the new subject (although this is frowned upon in our monogamy based society for mainly theological reasons). Thus love is, in fact definable, and personally, I find that this does not cause romantic love to lose any of its allure. In fact, I believe that comprehending love through logic amplifies its appeal greatly, as you can fully appreciate the phenomenon in all its aspects without your view being distorted by mysticism and irrationality. Although I have yet to fall in love, I eagerly await to experience it with someone who shares my value system and morality, and exemplifies the traits I attach value to.
Wow, thanks for posting this. Pablo Neruda sure has a lot of poetry about love. I guess this must be because it's so difficult to pin down and describe. I especially like Sonnet XVII. Have you seen this poster of it? It's really beautiful.
